Exit Clov will be back in Cambridge, MA. They’ll be playing on March 5, 2008 at the Middle East Club starting at around 9pm. I’ve been told they’ll be playing with three other bands. Show is 18+ with a cover charge of $8. If you haven’t seen this quintet play before, come check them out. Check out our interview of Suz and Em that we did back on November 4.

Exit Clov comes to Cambridge
On Sunday night (11/4), Boston Progress brought out alt-rock band Exit Clov for a cozy performance in one of Harvard Square’s historic buildings. And they played the roof off.
Maybe it was the intimacy of the space, or maybe because it was a BPAC production, or maybe it was the leftover wine I steadily sipped from the plastic cup I carried with me through setup, performance, and take down of the show—the band delivered a technically complex, and sonically awesome set.
The show was slated to begin at 8, but actual start time went a little later. 30 or so folks milled around the building looking at boston progress and exit clov merch while the musicians tuned up. At about 8:30 and everyone filed into the studio for the show. Boston singer/songwriter Eli Kao opened the night with some melodic songs and nifty guitar effects.
Then Exit Clov came out and rocked the house.
If you’ve listened to the BPR stream a few times, you’ve probably heard their music. I expected they’d be soft, electronic, sway-back-and-forth type music from the tracks I heard. Not that night. Their live show is a multi-instrument wielding, cymbal crashing, propane-tank playing, audio spectacle. And a blast to watch.
You can watch them too (and you really should). Check their tour schedule at their site, and look out for the post-show interview with frontwomen Emily and Suz coming soon.
Thanks goes out to all the members of the band, to Eli, and to all the folks that spent their Sunday night with us at the show. Let’s do it again soon.

We’re having a special open mic for Exit Clov. As you may recall, they were going to come up to Boston a few months ago to do a special show. But alas, due to unforeseen circumstances, they had to cancel. But, they are going to be back on November 4. They will probably be playing at the Cambridge Community for Adult Education or just CCAE for short. Show time and exact address will be announced soon.

1 commentAnd he will make the face of heav’n so fine…
While today is a happy day here at BPR, it is also a day of mourning. Our friends Exit Clov have posted a message on their website announcing the passing of Papa Hsu, Em and Suz’s father:
People have inquired as to why so many shows of late have been cancelled… It saddens us to be the bearer of bad news but last Friday morning we lost a close member of the Clov family. Em and Suz’s father “Papa” Hsu passed away after years of battling serious illness. After undergoing a risky surgical procedure in March the ladies’ father was unable to recover.
Our deepest condolescenses go out to the Exit Clov family and to the Hsu family.
“When he shall die
Take him and cut him out in little stars
And he will make the face of heav’n so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.”
- William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Usually when I think about political music, hip hop is the genre that comes to mind. Exit Clov, a band based in Washington, D.C., has disabused me of these preconceived notions. Fronted by twin Taiwanese-American sisters, this five-piece indie rock band combines decidedly socialist lyrics with catchy melodies and surreal harmonic vocals. And the guitar, keys, and drums all sound pretty good too.
The latest EP from Exit Clov, entitled Respond Respond, is their first album released by LiveWire Recordings. Of course, it was released back in September 2006, but BPR wasn’t even around back then, so I’m reviewing it now. The EP contains 6 tracks. Some of the songs are re-recordings, but every piece still sounds as fresh and as mesmerizing as ever. My favorite song is Violent Berries, not because Marx and Engels are mentioned, but because the video of Susan stabbing Emily (or is it Emily stabbing Susan) is just so incredibly shocking.
I hope that Exit Clov is working on a full-length album soon because nobody does “kaleidescope pop noir” like they do.

Our friend from D.C., Exit Clov, is going to be back in the Boston area. (Yippee!) They’ll be playing at Hennessey’s Upstairs in Faneuil Hall. Exit Clov is a really great indie band, so you have no reason not to go.
