Back Home

I wasn’t planning on posting anything related to the Blue Scholars for a while, since our staff got a little hyper-excited over the release of their new album, “Bayani,” which hasn’t made its way East yet. Plus there’s so many artists on BPR or not on BPR that we would like to give a little shine to, and just haven’t had the chance yet - but I feel compelled to do this one.

The music video for “Back Home” has made its way online, and it is a poignant tribute to folks overseas. Not much more I can say, except that I hope you make time during your day to check it out.

A Day In The Life of Blue Scholars

A Day In The Life of Blue Scholars

My man Freedom is the one braking it down in the middle of the video about what it really means to be an “illegal” immigrant.

Blue Scholars coming to the Northeast?

So I was browsing my myspace.com bulletin messages and I read one sent out by the Blue Scholars. If y’all can’t tell, I have this “thing” for the Blue Scholars. Anyway, they were plugging the Capitol Hill Block Party in their bulletin; it is a show I never went to while I toiled away in college. Silly me.

Unfortunately, the party rocks out on July 27th and I’ll be happily toiling away here in Boston. However, I did read an interesting nugget in the Blue Scholars’ bulletin: “This festival [the Capitol Hill Block Party] is excellent, it’s our only Seattle show this summer and we’ll be flying back from the Northeast tour just to do it. A ton of other great band[s] playing.”

Hmm… the key words for me are “Northeast tour”. Hey, Boston is in the Northeast. Might Geo and Sabzi be bringing the infinite inkwell to the Bean?

Bayani

Those lucky folks at Three Imaginary Girls have a review up about the new album from the Blue Scholars. They’re lucky because they got to listen to the album already. And I thought Geo and Sabzi were our friends! Just kidding.

Anyway, the second album from the hip hop duo looks to be another good one. How I wish I were in Seattle! (The CD Release party is Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 at the Showbox in Seattle!) I think it is time for my good friends in Seattle to prove their friendship to me by picking up a signed copy of Bayani and sending it to me…

Blue Scholars on Rawkus

I love these guys… one DJ and one MC. Maybe it’s because they are from Seattle, home of my alma mater, the UW. Or maybe it’s because they talk about the sights and sounds of Seattle in almost every song they do. Or maybe the lyrics resonate with my social justice soul. Anyway, the point of this blog entry is to tell all you hip hop fans out there on the West Coast to go out and see the Blue Scholars. They’ll be touring with Common Market and Gabriel Teodros.

One bit of good and bad news is that the Blue Scholars signed with Rawkus. That’s good because it means more people will hear about them and they’ll probably tour out here. The bad news for us is that we probably won’t be able to play any of the music off their new album Bayani on this station. According to the Three Imaginary Girls, they are slated to release their first album on Rawkus on June 12. Hopefully, they’ll come out to Boston to do a show. Rock Rock On.
