Shuffled! Jerry Ma

Shuffled! is a regular column appearing most Thursdays here on BPRLive. Each column, we welcome someone from the API* community to share some thoughts about the music they listen to. Check out the Shuffled! archive for past articles. (Apologies readers, we don’t always link to online playlists anymore; this week’s playlist was compiled voluntarily by Sham-e Ali al-Jamil. Scroll to the bottom to play it while you read!)

Today’s Shuffler: Jerry Ma

jerrymaJerry is a fulltime graphic designer that has his own line of tee shirts as well as is the artist and creator of a indie comic book called BURN.

For more on that stuff, you can check out his site at www.epicprops.com.

Just recently Jerry was a part of the Asian Superhero Anthology book Secret Identities as the Art Director, in which he also drew two short stories for the book. Fore more on the book, you can go here www.secretidentities.org.

Jerry does not like long walks on the beach, but does love to snowboard and is a diehard Mets, Jets and Knicks fan.

Let the shuffling begin….

Planet Shining
M-Flo

This group was first introduced to me by my younger brother, Jimmy Ma. He actually gave me the cd as part of my 26th birthday present. It was recommended to him by his friend and rapper, Roy “Snacky Chan” Kim.

M-Flo can best be described as a Japanese jazzy hip hop group. These guys are great. I recommend the cd to everyone.

Theme song to Enter the Dragon
Haha….ok, I have this track on my ipod…only because I had to have it as my ringtone on my cellphone…years ago. Seriously…this was the BEST ringtone I’ve ever had. Bruce Lee is screaming an everything. I always thought this would be a GREAT sample for any smart rapper.

Off The Wall
Michael Jackson

Ok….so before all this recent hubbub about MJ, I always let it be known that he was and still is my favorite singer of all time. NOTHING can compare to old Michael…back when he was singing with more funk and disco in his beats. Nobody moves the way this man does. Man…that is some good timeless $h!+.

Who? Where? Why?
Jesus Jones

This album, Doubt….is one of my favorite cds of all time. In fact…this was the 2nd cd I have ever owned. Second to Kool Moe Dee.

But this album…I still listen to tracks from it…almost everyday actually. These guys are totally under rated. And this album is fantastic. It’s a good blend of rock, punk and electronica.

Lets Take One More Rocket to the Moon
Erasure

Ok ok ok….now I KNOW these aren’t the most rugged guys to have playing on your ipod. But I can’t help it. It’s the “asian” in me I suppose. This light on their feet duo will always be my favorite band. Coming up a short second to MJ. Their cd The Innocents was one of the most influential albums of my early high school days. AND this happens to be one of my favorite tracks from them. Give it a shot when you can. The lyrics are actually pretty solid. And I can’t help it…their music just makes me happy.

The photo of Jerry is kind of menacing. A graphic design artists that likes guns?
