Dear BPRLive, what’s your Asian American snack?
With the closing of the Kotobukiya grocery store, I’ve been reminiscing about the snack foods I grew up eating and came to think of as Asian and/or Asian American. Here are some I’ve been hooked on at various times…
wasabi roasted peas, shrimp chips, nori-covered, terriyaki-flavored rice crunchies, カレーパン, mochi, mochi ice cream, pineapple cakes, peanuts fused into bars with caramel or some similar sugary substance, roasted sesame seeds fused into bars in a similar manner, fruit gummies, HiChew, dried squid, kimchee…
There are undoubtedly more, but those are the ones that come to mind at the moment. You might notice the glaring omission of certain snacks that have a reputation for being “favorites”; just so you know, I had some bad experiences with haw flakes and white rabbit candies.
What are your favorite Asian and/or Asian American snacks? Tell us in the comments section of this post! Is there a snack food you think is distinctly Asian American? All the ones I’ve listed are pretty much Asian in origin but are eaten by many Asian Americans I know…

haw flakes, those processed tamarind candies(?).
the fruit gummies have gone from bite-sized to 2-bites-sized because i think kids were choking on them.
When I was younger, I always enjoyed eating Chinese-style beef jerky. The Chinese make jerky that comes in so many different flavors: soy sauce, fruity, spicy, curry. On top of that it was always moist unlike American-style beef jerky. Since I stopped eating beef though, I don’t indulge in Chinese-style beef jerky anymore.
Another one of my favorites is dried tofu strips and squares. These also come in many different flavors: satay, spicy, fruity, etc. I always got annoyed when the little bits of dried tofu get caught in my teeth, but it was worth it.
Now, I’m making myself hungry. Is it time for lunch yet?
