A One-Question Interview with Angry Asian Man
I was definitely late to this party. I first found out about Phil Yu’s website AngryAsianMan.com from an interview Phil did with Stir TV several years back (is that gone too now?), but Phil has been blogging there for 8 years! Upon some reflection, however, I think someone mentioned Phil’s website to me prior to that, but having visited Asia as a child and watched various Asian movies, impressions I gleaned of angry asian men in my youth may have unconsciously compelled me to forget about this site. If so, I wish that hadn’t happened. Phil’s website is an engaging, ever-evolving look at various aspects of Asian American culture.
Phil gave ECAASU 2009 attendees a behind-the-scenes look at his website, discussing an assortment of ideas and questions. Afterwards, eager to apply the interview method I had so recently gained from Kelly’s workshop, I asked Phil one question to focus on a single idea Phil briefly mentioned during his workshop. This approach worked out well since Phil gave a great overview of his website and views during the workshop, and following the workshop, Phil’s fandom manifested itself intensely (in the form of numerous ECAASU attendees asking for photos and autographs).
Here’s something Phil says in this podcast that resonates with conversations I’ve had recently and also with ideas in the upcoming podcast with Ryan Takemiya: There’s art that advocates for social change. And then there’s just art itself being social change.
