It’s March. And in March, there are a bunch of events to look forward to. First, there’s Spring. It’s been snowy all winter here in Boston. In fact, we’re about to get hit with another blast from Mother Nature. So, the vernal equinox is looking mighty good from where I am. Secondly, March is the anniversary month of Boston Progress’ East Meets Words Open Mic, the longest running Asian American open mic in the United States. For four fine years, Boston Progress has been opening up the East Meets West Bookstore and welcoming people to share their words, their thoughts, and their music.
This month’s feature is The BPAC Beat Collective, a music collective featuring members of Boston Progress and a few of our friends. Formed in Fall 2008, the core of the collective features instrumentalists Charles Kim on bass guitar, Pedro Magni on keys, Dave Kong on the beatbox, and Eric Rosenbaum on the trombone. At various times, they’ve had different guitarists join the mix (Bhurin Sead, Kenny Penguin, and Glen Galindo). Fronting the band is open mic mainstays MC Analyze/Popadop/Victor C and Pen Khek Chear. Known for their energizing and eclectic sounds, the BPAC Beat Collective recently opened for the nationally-recognized hip hop duo Blue Scholars from Seattle.
But, you don’t have to take my word for it. Get yourself to the East Meets Words Bookstore at 934 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge on March 13. Bring $3 and if you wish, a piece to share. The event is open to the public. All ages. [Photo credit: Leona Louise Merk]
