Aural Presence – a conversation with Giles Li

giles_accessories_cover Welcome back to Aural Presence: Asian American Presents! This regular Boston Progress Radio podcast series brings the voices of Boston-area API* artists and activists to you by sharing conversations, music, poetry and more.

This week, we speak with Giles Li.

You may have recently encountered Giles Li introducing Vyvy, Teng, Taiyo and Magnetic North at their recent show in the East Meets West Bookstore or at other Boston Progress events. In this podcast, Giles — who describes his work with the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, at least in part, as being “just a dude who’s available” for the community –talks about being a spoken word artist as well as his perspectives on spoken word and art.

Here are a couple things you’ll find in this podcast:

“What’s still the most important part or what speaks to me the most… is stuff like the open mic that we hold or you know, any open mic, where there’s no reason to be there other than be there… It’s not like I’m going to this open mic so I can get noticed by a casting agent and put in a movie, but it’s just strictly I’m going to be here because this is where I wanna be. You know, either sharing something or… listening to what other people are saying. And that’s the experience that is still central to what spoken word is… That’s the part of the experience that cannot be chewed up and spit out.”

“What I’d like to be able to do is, you know, honestly say that at the end of the day that I’m putting more positive energy out back into the world than I’m taking from it.”

Post-ECAASU Update! The podcast now begins and ends with Giles’ spoken word performances at ECAASU 2009!
