Shuffled! is a weekly column appearing every Thursday here on BPRLive. Each week, we welcome a person from the APA community to share some thoughts about the music they listen to. Check out the Shuffled! archive for past articles.
Today’s Shuffler: DJ Marlino “da5footafunk”
As a 20-year veteran to the DJing game, Marlino’s DJ career started as a mobile disc jockey in 1988, which led to an opportunity to work in the radio industry in 1995 at WILD 107.7 FM (which shortly changed to WILD 94.9) in San Francisco. In 1997, he landed himself a spot as an On-Air Personality and Mixshow DJ at Jammin Z90.3 FM in San Diego where he made his mark as the first DJ in San Diego to spin live on the air on 3 turntables.
After over 11 years working in radio, in the Fall of 2006, Marlino passed on an opportunity to return to the radio industry in order to develop the podcast show Heavy Rotation – The Rise of Filipino Hip Hop and R&B. The idea was realized on December 8, 2007, as the first Filipino Hip Hop and R&B radio show on the world wide web. The idea was to establish a media outlet for Filipino Hip Hop and R&B music.
Aside from his professional experiences in radio, Marlino earned a Bachelor’s of Art degree in Communications from California State University, San Marcos, and is Certified as a Media and Marketing Specialist from San Diego State University. Marlino also founded Bitanga Advertising, Inc., a boutique Asian American Advertising Agency specializing in reaching an Urban Asian audience. As a community leader and role model, Marlino also facilitates workshops at local and regional Filipino American high school conferences, and offers advertising and marketing-related seminars for schools and businesses.
Here’s the shuffle…
“Full & Paid”
The Cool Kids
The Cool Kids have become my new favorite hip hop group. Their sound is so refreshing! You can tell that their influences are from the ’80s, but tweaked with a new school feel, although they aren’t old school themselves. I really like the music that they are pushing right now, they are doing things no one else is doing right now, it’s that feel good, party banging, bump in your trunk type of music. It has really made me start to appreciate hip hop again, especially since we are in the age where hip hop has become somewhat stale. One of my favorite joints off their mixtape That’s Stupid the Mixtape is Full & Paid. They kind of flip Eric B and Rakim’s version of Paid In Full. Make sure you get a taste and definitely peep out their music!
“Two Occasions”
The Deele
The Classic! This song actually might make people see how old I really am. The truth is to me this is the ultimate song that really tells someone that you love them. It’s everything about this song, the lyrics, the melody. It’s one of those songs that really expresses how you feel for someone.
“Come Over”
Estelle
This song is actually very sentimental to me because it reminds me of a period in my life in which I fell in love with a good friend (mmc). The entire song defines what our friendship and our relationship is like, and what it feels like for me, falling in love with her each day. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of how much she means to me, and of my promise and commitment to take care of her and to make her happy.
“Hopie Smile”
Hopie Spitshard
This Filipino American artist coming out of the bay, reminds me of the modern day mix of Moni Love and Lady Bug from Digable Planets. This song in particular reminds me of why I followed my passion to start my own business and projects, and what it feels like to be on the grind. In addition, Hopie to me is an inspiration, she defines a strong woman with substance.
“Tell Me When To Go”
E-40
I am definitely a Bay Area representative, it is my home and my foundation. This is by far one of my all time favorite songs. It reminds me so much about the bay, especially during the time when bay area hip hop finally had its chance to be recognized in the mainstream. Plus it makes me feel like getting hyphy… Yeeeee!

“that’s day and night…”
i was like 9 years old and so wished i had someone to sing this to.
later babyface went solo with this kind of song-writing prowess and worked with stevie wonder, madonna, jay-z, and eric clapton in the space of like 3 years. then later he bought 100 DVDs and watched one per night. then his wife divorced him and married eddie murphy.
oh how the mighty have fallen.
