East Meets Words: Ms. Conchita Campos

Conchita

The May 2008 edition of the East Meets Words Open Mic was a special one for me because it marked my one year anniversary with the Open Mic. It was a year ago this month when I came to watch the great Bao Phi perform at EMW. It was love at first sight for me and the Open Mic. It became an escape for me to enjoy creativity that I can’t find anywhere else. EMW has also allowed me to meet some great people and introduced me to the Asian American culture in Boston. It has been a great year for me and EMW.

JasonThere was a wide range of topics discussed during the Open Mic but Mother’s Day became the most popular theme fitting because it was on the following Sunday. Jason started the Open Mic with his friend the djembe drum and gave a pretty unique performance. I hope he comes back. Eric “ranted” on and on about his mother and two grandmothers. There was a lot of talk about cooking. It made some of the folks in the audience a little hungry.

Febo performed a poem/letter addressed to Mrs. Febo. Andy emceed the Boston rendition of “Joe Metro” over Blue Scholar instros and Giles returned to tell us why he doesn’t care about the upcoming election (or perhaps, more accurately, how an election will not change the world or make it a better place.) Joey B ended the segment with his desire to step out of the “Box.”

This Month’s feature was Conchita Campos, formerly from California but now residing in New York City. I first met Conchita in February when she performed at Northeastern. I have to admit, I did not get to watch Conchita perform that night because I was running around making sure the concert was going smoothly so this was actually the first time watching Conchita perform. Ms. Campos arrived just in time for her set due to traffic, but she did not disappoint. She went into her set right away without a breather. Her guitar melodies were catchy and soothing, and her voice was truly a breathe of fresh air. The fact that she didn’t rest between her hectic commute to Boston and her set showed how talented she really is. Nice to see you again Ms. Campos and this time, I finally got a chance to hear you sing. Check out one of the songs she sang in the video below.
