Today’s Shuffler: Catzie Vilayphonh
Laotian American multi-talented spoken word artist Catzie Vilayphonh is the Fashion Director for two.one.five magazine where she also writes a weekly interview column called Catz Out The Bag. In the column, Catzie a.k.a. Catzuella questions all kinds of interesting folks from designers to directors and artists to actors. Previously, she was an editor at dorkmag.com, and a manager and assistant buyer at Ubiq.
When she’s not working at her day job, Catzie is one member of the spoken word group Yellow Rage. If y’all didn’t know they were featured on the first episodes of Def Poetry in 2000 (when it was actually still good). If you got the time, tune into their live interview here at Boston Progress Radio.
She’s been a citizen of Philly for nearly all her life and says she knows cheesesteaks like the back of her hand.
Now, on to the shuffle…
Apparently Apple products and I do not get along (ask Michelle how many times my computer has crashed or needed to be fixed). With that being said, I just chose my most played songs. Here’s my list:
Lil Tookie
Taiyo Na
Taiyo is a homie from New York, poet and now singer-songwriter, and he sent his debut CD Love Is Growth a couple weeks ago. This was my favorite track from his album, probably because it reminded me of Stetsasonic’s Sally Walks. Although I think the reason it made the most played list was because I accidentally pressed repeat and turned off the sound and forgot.
Me Myself and I
(Punjabi MC Remix)
My boyfriend is Punjabi Indian, and he likes to listen to a lot of Bhangra music. But since he hardly gets any kind of exposure to it here in Philly, he listens to the BBC Radio which also does Bhangra Mashups of American songs. This one is a really good one, because I already know the lyrics and can sing along with it, but the Bhangra instruments make it better.
Teri Baaton
Raghav
Yet another influence of the boyfriend. Raghav is an R&B singer from Canada, who made it big in the UK. The title means “Your Words,” but the beat is over one of the most recognizable reggae songs ever – Chaka Demus and Pliers’ “Murder She Wrote”. I think it is pretty cool to sing a love song that is also a dance floor hit too. There is an English version of the song but it’s called “Angel Eyes” and probably not the same lyrics, but I like the Teri song better because I think him singing in Hindi sounds mature and therefore sexier.
Living Proof
Kelis
I heard this on my friend Has’ page one day, who is a big Kelis fan. I’ve always like Kelis for her style and raspy voice. Plus she’s married to Nas and she’s racially mixed Chinese! I didn’t get the Kelis Was Here album, which this song was on because well, the internet made it easy to stop buying whole albums.
Creator
SantoGold
So I work for two.one.five magazine which is based out of Philly. We recently did a photoshoot with SantoGold whose real name is Santi White, and is originally from Philly. Before she decided to become an artist she wrote songs for Res. I like her new stuff out now though, because it’s not so Neo-Soul sounding. Her songs now sounds more electro and edgy, kinda like M.I.A. who I am also a big fan of, and Creator is my favorite track. Oh yeah, I got to be in the music video for it too.

awesome catzie.
i loved this! thank you catzie.
yo lil’ tookie is one of my fam tracks from taiyo’s album too!
this was mad fun! i wanna do this again!
good look on the stetsasonic reference. that was a good one, but i don’t know whether to take this entry as as insult or compliment. what’s really hood, cat? you wanna brawl?
on second thought, i don’t want to brawl, but i’d like a clarification.
yo taiyo, i ususally got your back you know that, but you on your own against catzie man. i ain’t messing with her.
i was saying you were old school, which is a good thing if you’re a musician because it means you studied up…
or were you referring to the “accidentally pressed repeat and forgot to turn it off”? yes i sometimes need to put albums on repeat, to get into it especially when i am at work. when i compiled the list of my most played tracks your “tookie” made the most played by like a bajillion plays. although it is my favorite song from your album, i had to clarify that so that my other fave songs dont get their feelin hurts, na’ mean?
and giles you stop undercover instigatin, i’ll get michelle on you!
all right, i got it. it’s all good. i misinterpreted that. i thought you wasn’t feeling the song and you were just putting it on there for charity or something. all right, all right, let’s bring the love back, elder poets.
no love for giles though.
