Good Asian Drivers Tour

A couple of friends of Boston Progress Arts Collective has embarked on a new adventure to spread positive facts and debunk old lies about Asian Americans—to tell everyone how awesome Asian Americans are behind the wheel.
Kit Yan—transgendered champion slam poet—and Melissa Li—lesbian folkrocker—are driving across the country in a small automobile, spreading their music and words wherever they go. Both of them featured at East Meets Words last year and I had the privilege of interviewing them for Boston Progress Radio.
You can follow them on their cross country journey as they travel through 30 states and 20 major cities, seeking out the Asian American and queer communities, and representing voices that are not often heard. Read about their adventures on their blog and check when they might be coming through your town.
Before they head out on their journey, they’ve been making a few cool videos too. I’m especially fond of their spoof of “Bubbly” by Colbie Caillet. The video made me think a little more about my “online footprint.” I’m not so narcissistic to believe that folks would want to stalk me, but I am wary of my privacy and of what I write about online.
Kit and Melissa recently did another spoof video, “Teardrops on Kit’s Guitar.” It is a spoof of a Taylor Swift song, not as well known as the “Bubbly” song, but the video is just as good. You can check it out here:
If you get a chance and are in the Boston area, you should definitely catch the Good Asian Drivers Tour before they head out of town. They are doing several shows, but if you can only go to one show, you should check out their going-away-party show at Shine located at 1 Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA on March 20, 2008. The show is sponsored by MadFemmePride, the Queer Asian Pacific-Islander Alliance of New England, the Spectra Entertainment Group, and Boston Progress Arts Collective. The opening acts are Joya and Tre Alee. Tickets are $8 at the door and $5 for students.
