Oo-blay Olars-skay

Good morning all. Long time no hear from.

We here at BPRLive have been trying to give shine to up-and-comers and never-heard-of-before-ers and folks you don’t usually get to peep day to day. But I haven’t been keeping up with the Teddy Zee-like duties on the scene recently, so I’m temporarily throwing yall some info about old friends instead of new ones: Blue Scholars.

First of all, Blue Scholars’ producer/DJ/hypeman/choreographer Sabzi and some of the beats he’s produced recently beat (← slick right?) all comers in the Red Bull Big Tune competition, including big names like DJ Babu, Marco Polo, and many others. As a prize, Sabzi gets to go in the studio with his choice of Talib Kweli, Redman, or Young Buck. No confirmation if and when that might happen, but there are unsubstantiated rumors floating around the non-Internets world. I don’t want to go out on a limb and commit to a prediction, so I’ll move on by saying G-G-G G-Uni…etc.

In other news, I was just hipped to the fact that BS got videos up on MTV.com – which is kinda weird because for many years now, “MTV” has been shorthand for “mainstream American acceptance.” I be hearing it at college conferences all over, that we need to get API artists on MTV, which would be a legitimate first step toward equality. Like it seems like people make such a huge deal out of getting on MTV, and then Blue Scholars – a legitimately revolutionary, intelligent, artistic, and talented API group – does in fact get up on the MTV website, and I didn’t really hear anything about it from anyone. I wonder if folks mean that we need to see API artists on MTV being just as brainless, ignorant, and talent-less as Justin Timberlake and Nickelback.

Anyway, I have a weird relationship with MTV, in that I am forced to pay for it along with my cable package, yet I can never bring myself to watch it for more than 15 or 20 seconds at a time. It is so dreadful. I asked if I could trade it for the Fine Living Network, but they said no. Maybe if they played more songs like “Joe Metro,” I’d peep it now and then. Check it out below.

Joe Metro. I think this is one of the more “palatable” tracks off the Bayani album. Palatable to the general public since it is about the neighborhoods of Seattle. Political, but more about family and community.

I think it is my favorite song from the new album. Brings me back to my days in Seattle.

    Peace.
