When September arrives in Boston, hordes of college students return. The leaves begin to change as the sweltering dog days of summer leave us behind. But East Meets Words goes on. The September East Meets Words Open Mic sponsored by the Boston Progress Arts Collective will feature Kit Yan. Once again, it will go down at the East Meets West Bookstore at 934 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02140. Hope to see many new faces there. Cover charge is $3.

Chan from New York City will be performing at the Great Scott at 1222 Commonwealth Avenue, Allston, MA. He’s a hip hop artist. Check out his myspace page for samples of his music. I did and while I was there I found out that his favorite color is red. The show is 21+ and the cover charge is $12 advance/$14 at the door. Doors open at 9pm. He’ll be rocking the house with Rookadamus, Singapore Kane, Unified Particles, and Aztech and Hektik Vudoo Soul, Masta Wu of YG Family, and Ailah.
The following message is an uncreative message about new music that is playing on Boston Progress Radio. But at least the music we’re playing is decent.
Christina Chung is an R&B singer from New York City. She’s got a new single out called “Prove It.” I’m not sure what to say about it, except that it sounds like what you’d hear on the radio. Funny thing though, she’s recently been talking about running around New York City naked and thinking about taking her music in a new direction.
Monolidic is a new indie rock band out of Los Angeles, California. I don’t know too much about them, except that they kind of sound like an early The Cure. We’ve got their single entitled “Delirium Tremens” playing on the radio. They have other tracks that sound pretty good too on Myspace.
Seriously. We’ve talked about this band before. They had their own online reality show. They’ve been getting mad Internet press from Angry Asian Man. They have a music video for their song “Irony.” They do rock and roll. We’ve got all the new songs from their latest EP “Seriously” playing on the radio. Their music is pretty down to earth, so enjoy!
The Seriously EP is being released by the Chaos Theory Music label started by Woody Pak. Woody is not only a producer, but also a very accomplished musician and we are pleased to be able to play some of his music here on Boston Progress Radio. He recently released a new album entitled “Hyped Urban Remix.” It’s funk meets urban rap.
Oh yeah and we’ve also got a new remix of Bambu’s “Pull It Back”. This track comes courtesy of Proper Speaks.
Tune in and keep on supporting independent Asian American music.

We here at Boston Progress Radio have been up and running since March, and in less than five months time, we’ve managed to pull in visitors from all over the world. Seriously, folks from every region of the world - except Antarctica - have checked us out.
Over here on our home turf, hundreds of people have been tuning in, with the most coming from Massachusetts, and California not far behind. Rounding out the top ten are New York, Illinois, Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Washington, and DC. No real surprises there I guess. (And for you sticklers who say DC isn’t a state, I could tell you that Minnesota ranks 11th, but I could also tell you that DC has a larger population than Wyoming and its residents pay the same taxes the rest of us do. The biggest obstacle to statehood is that Wyoming is 5 percent people of color, while the District is 69 percent. It doesn’t take a genius for this one.)
But something that is surprising is that almost every state in the country has checked us out at some point. There are only 9 states that have yet to see one of their residents surf on over. So if you know anybody in North Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, West Virginia, Delaware, or South Carolina, send them a link! Tell them to listen to the streaming radio station!
Help us spread the word: Boston Progress Radio is for the kids!

No commentsMusic from the Mound
So were you guys looking for more news that totally makes sense?
How about Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka releasing a CD? Yeah, just like that.
According to Red Sox Public Relations: “Music From The Mound from Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka features a compilation of Matsuzaka’s favorite and inspirational songs from various American, English and Japanese recording artists.”
Normally, I wouldn’t really give much thought to this item, because Daisuke - sorry, I don’t use his media-approved nickname - is a professional athlete whose name happens to be attached to a project being done for charity. It happens all the time. Read more

3 commentsEast Meets Words Open Mic: Yellow Rage
It was that time of the month again at the East Meets West Bookstore and this month’s East Meets Words Open Mic series featured the dynamic duo of Michelle and Catzie, also known as Yellow Rage. Based in Philadelphia, they are Asian American female spoken word poets who have appeared in the nationally recognized show Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam on HBO. Before we got to the main attraction, the Open Mic segment featured some familiar faces as well as some new faces. Following tradition, Vinh started off the show by experimenting with a new style of writing that he inherited in New York. Following Vinh was Scott Cahalane who recalled his first kiss and took the audience back to when they had their first kiss. Theresa and Tara each read a piece that they wrote when they were traveling. Theresa’s piece was about her journey on the bus to Atlanta and Tara’s piece was about her journey home to Boston. Other performers include Mike Keo and Pedro but the Open Mic segment concluded with Giles Li who performed a song that he wrote that day while waiting for the cable guy to finish installing his cable.
4 commentsLove Songs
For my 21st birthday, I received my first mix CD. I played the hell out of that CD; it was probably the only CD I played for the next two months. I remember feeling touched, feeling emotional in a different way, because somehow, the songs conveyed all of the emotions that couldn’t be put in to words.
Today on Boston Progress Radio, love is taking over the airwaves. And by love, I don’t just mean the gooey nauseating kind of baby-making-love. By love, I mean commitment to growth. By love, I mean support and nourishment for the soul. (Ok, and maybe a little of the baby-making-kind of love. Heck, where do you think Asian American babies come from?) Love for partners, love for fam, love for community. Boston Progress Radio is a labor of love.
So, I set out to make a mixtape/playlist of love songs that capture this. And I wanted my playlist to feature Asian American artists. Because, heck, Asian Americans can love too, right?
