America’s Got Talent?

I remember watching an episode of America’s Got Talent on Fox few days ago. And this guy named Kashif came on and did this ridiculous routine. I was laughing hysterically but somehow someway he made it on to the next round. Then I saw the article on angryasianman.com and made me wonder if this was just another William Hung kind of thing? I mean it was entertaining but does he really have talent? Here is the video and I want to know what you think.

William Hung was entertaining, but for the wrong reasons (reasons that make me angry). I’m not sure what to think about this gentleman. Kashif is entertaining and he’s not a bad dancer, but perhaps he’s moving onto the next round because people find him amusing. Somehow, I get the feeling that people are mocking him. And maybe some of the reasons he’s being mocked is because he’s an immigrant, he’s Pakistani and he’s male?

    Hung vs Kanshi!

I think Hung became a phenomenon b/c he was an oddity, and Kanshi made it to the next round for similar reasons. A large part of this is that they’re asian foreigners, and fit easily into the more f’d up caricatures western folks have conceived of Asians.

But I feel there’s something different between this dude doing a dance that’s part of his culture compared with the outright mockery of hung trying to sing an american pop song.

i give both of them love and wish them the best. if other people think their existence is something to laugh at or whatever, then that’s their problem.

i also rooted for sanjaya. honestly, what was so bad about him? why all the hate? i thought he sang pretty damn good.

I don’t know why all the hate. Maybe we’re just jealous of success?

I think my problem is not with William Hung or Sanjaya or Kashif. My problem is people that mock them and TV shows like American Idol and America’s Got Talent who make fun of them for the purposes of ratings. Do you see any of the white people who sucked on American Idol getting so much air time?

Maybe I’m too sensitive about this issue. Maybe it is okay for William Hung to be getting all this attention. I mean it is good for him. But maybe it does a disservice to other AA artists.

dude i totally agree with you. william hung, i’ve always felt - ok, people got a laugh out of the fact that he wasn’t that great. as much as i don’t find it funny, i guess it is what it is…

but is he so bad that he deserves to be a punchline now? like 5 years after it happened? his race is pretty much the sole factor as to why people actually know his name, compared to all the other awful singers on those shows. the joke isn’t that he’s bad - but that it’s a combination of the fact that he’s bad and asian.

sanjaya though - that’s just some straight hating because that boy could actually sing.
