Bao Phi and Vidya Rao doing the BPR interview Once again, BPR was given the opportunity to interview an extremely talented artist. This time, we were delighted to have Bao Phi sit down for an interview with our own Vidya Rao. Bao Phi has accomplished much in his 18 year career as a poet. I’m not going to list all the awards and recognitions he has received - you can read about them on his website. Besides, I don’t think I can talk about him as well as he can talk about himself. He’s a poet after all!

I also had an opportunity to talk to him after the show. One thing I got from speaking to him is that he is very passionate about his work as a community arts organizer. I particularly find his work with indigenous poets inspiring. Indigenous people of the world could possibly be the most oppressed group in the world - no matter where you go, you find their lands and their way of life being taken away by colonial greed. Granted each particular indigenous culture has different experiences, but I’d be hard pressed to find one who hasn’t gotten the shortest end of all sticks. Indeed, they are often forgotten in this nation’s discussion of race. I’m impressed to see Bao help native peoples get their oral stories out into their own communities.

Of course, Bao isn’t saving the world all the time. He is apparently a big fan of Lost. He told me that while watching Season One, he really thought the plot was terrible. Maybe he just didn’t like the initial portrayal of the Korean couple. Despite his low expectations, by the end of the first DVD, he was in tears. Guess the subplot got better or maybe Bao is just a sap… Nah, I take that back, he’s more than just a sap, he’s a loud-talking sap. [Full disclosure: I've never watched Lost and I know basically next to nothing about it.]

I like how the caption on the photo says it’s of Bao Phi and Vidya Rao, but there’s 3 people in the photo. One of whom looks like he’s about to jump out the chair and start beating Bao in the head.

Unfortunately, I forgot that gentleman’s name (my bad). And he told it to me twice. Apparently he met Bao in Minnesota too.
