Interview with Patricio Ginelsa, Jr.
Patricio Ginelsa, a filmmaker from Los Angeles, CA, was in Boston recently to give a talk at Boston College. He was kind enough to sit down with our own Giles Li and chat about his past and future projects.
Ginelsa is originally from Daly City, CA, where he started making video movies with his neighborhood at the age of 12. It was John Singleton’s 1992 film “Boyz N The Hood” that inspired Patricio to pursue a career in film at the University of Southern California where he graduated with a BA in cinema production. During college, Patricio worked part-time as a segment writer for an American-based Filipino show called “Pinoy Pa Rin” interviewing Filipino community leaders and celebrities.
After working at Paramount Pictures and Columbia Tri-Star, Patricio decided to become an independent filmmaker. Starting as a production intern, Patricio became the Associate Producer of the award-winning film “The Debut.” While making this film, he assisted in its theatrical distribution by driving his car around the country and reaching out to the Filipino-American community.
While Patricio is known for directing the music videos for the Tagalog songs “The Apl Song” and “Bebot”, both by the Black Eyed Peas, his true love is the making of feature films. He wrote and directed the feature-length video movie “LUMPIA” (2003 Hawaii International Film Festival, 2004 Toronto ReelWorld) which received a rave review from Variety.
